REPVBLIC Interview
What was your starting point to go deep into hip-hop culture? Did you have any influence from your family members or maybe some artists?
R. - My older brother in his younger years was a mad hip-hop fan, so I started listening to it at an early age.
I know that you moved to the UK and this is the place where you, basically, opened yourself to music. How has the lifestyle and the culture of this country changed your approach to making music?
I used to write my first lyrics in like 4th grade or something (laughs).. obviously it wasn't serious, so i just never even thought about continuing, but then when I landed in the UK, my first roommate was rapping, so that's where it all started for me with my first bars in English. Since my first arrival in the UK I felt the very similar atmosphere to the one I have lived in all my life back in St. Petersburg.
You said that the atmosphere in the UK is kind of similar to your hometown in Russia. Do you think it also applies to music? Or it’s a completely different vibe?
R. - For me, Russia and the UK have got much in common starting from the love to drink, football and the whole ‘casual’ style of clothing which affected the Russian street culture majorly, ending it with ‘Drill’ and tracksuits finally reaching that place. (Laughs)
What do you like about the UK rap scene?
R. - I like how the UK scene is more about the lyrics and wordplay than the sounding as it is in the US.
What is your creativity process and how did it change from the time you began to write lyrics until now?
R. - Ummm... I don't even know, you know.. good question. I remember I used to write lyrics very plain when now I feel like I am always trying to over complicate it, I reckon.
Some artists just disappear while they create something new, some of them come up with new material while traveling. How does it work in your situation?
R. - Oh, I'm always in my creative process, don't even watch that. (Laughs)
Nowadays, a lot of rap artists present themselves as ‘rockstars’, such as Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti. Do you feel the same way?
R. - (Laughs) Yeah, I don't really know what this is about but I guess it's like "doing what you want and not caring about nothing" type of thing.
You released your first EP “LowDog” almost one year ago already. Can you describe what was happening in your life at that time?
R. - Not going to lie, it wasn't an easy period of my life in terms of everything, from decisions to my mental health... but anyways, all of it was put in the project.
